چکیده

adherens junctions — within the apical junctional region of the Drosophila embryonic epithelium; this may provide mechanical stability during the junctional remodeling that accompanies tissue morphogenesis. Too much or too little ERM-mediated crosslinking impairs the migration of mesendoderm cells during zebrafish gastrulation and homing lymphocytes in mice. This is due in part to the cells’ inability to form protrusive processes that steer their migration. A better understanding of how ERM activation contributes to migration in these normal contexts will likely help to explain the association between excess ERM activation and tumor metastasis.

The welfare and suitability of primates kept as pets.

Amid growing concern about keeping exotic species as companion animals, nonhuman primates have been highlighted as inappropriate for private ownership. However, there has been no comprehensive review of the suitability of primates as pets, using a framework such as Schuppli and Fraser's (2000). Schuppli and Fraser incorporate welfare of the individual, of others, and of the environment. This ar...

Age of the earliest african anthropoids.

The earliest fossil record of African anthropoid primates (monkeys and apes) comes from the Jebel Qatrani Formation in the Fayum depression of Egypt. Reevaluation of both geologic and faunal evidence indicates that this formation was deposited in the early part of the Oligocene Epoch, more than 31 million years ago, earlier than previous estimates. The great antiquity of the fossil higher prima...

Primates of Bangladesh: a Preliminary Survey of Population and Habitat

The distribution and abundance of non-human primates in Bangladesh is presented. Roadside and forest surveys were conducted throughout the alluvial floodplains and hill regions ofSylhet, Chittagong, and Cox's Bazar. In forests, walking and vehicle transects were used to census primates. The ecology and status of major habitat types are discussed. Forest primate populations are evaluated accordi...

The natural place to begin: The ethnoprimatology of the Waorani

Ethnoprimatology is an important and growing discipline, studying the diverse relationships between humans and primates. However there is a danger that too great a focus on primates as important to humans may obscure the importance of other animal groups to local people. The Waorani of Amazonian Ecuador were described by Sponsel [Sponsel (1997) New World Primates: Ecology, evolution and behavio...

A problem shared is a problem reduced: seeking efficiency in the conservation of felids and primates.

Threats faced by mammalian species can be grouped into one of a handful of categories, such as habitat loss, unsustainable hunting and persecution. Insofar as they face common threats, diverse species may benefit from the same conservation intervention, thereby offering efficiencies in conservation action. We explore this proposition for primates and felids by examining coarse scale overlaps in...
